There are many different definitions of activities of daily living (ADLs), but you can typically categorize ADLs into 5 categories:
- Personal Hygiene: bathing, grooming, oral care
- Dressing: the ability to make appropriate clothing decisions and dress oneself
- Eating: the ability to feed oneself; not necessarily food preparation
- Continence: the mental and physical ability to use a restroom by oneself
- Mobility: the ability to move oneself from a seated to standing position or get in and out of bed
There are also instrumental activities of daily living, which are more specific or subtle activities that seniors may or may not be able to perform:
- Basic Communication Skills
- Transportation
- Meal Preparation
- Shopping
- Housework
- Medication Management
- Personal Finance Management
