The signs and symptoms of schizophrenia typically present themselves in three main types: Positive (new characteristics the individual displays), Negative (Characteristics the individual stops displaying), and Cognitive (mental processing of information is disrupted). For older adults, positive symptoms may decline in severity. Negative symptoms may ramp up in elderly patients with schizophrenia, and cognitive deficits tend to persist regardless of age.

Positive Symptoms:

  • Hallucinations
  • Delusions
  • Muddled thoughts and speech

Negative Symptoms:

  • Loss of interest
  • Emotionless
  • Withdrawal from social situations
  • Struggling with basic daily needs- not changing clothes or showering
  • Flakey- doesn’t follow through with plans or lacking the ability to follow a schedule

Cognitive Symptoms:

  • Attention Deficit- difficulty staying on one task or topic
  • Memory organization- it may be difficult for them to draw on several kinds of memories, such as directions to a restaurant and their sister’s phone number
